The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day at 8:01 a.m., in room B30, Senate of Canada Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Josée Verner, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Arnot, Aucoin, Fridhandler, Lewis, McCallum, Miville-Dechêne, Verner, P.C., Wells (Newfoundland and Labrador) and Youance (9).
Participating in the meeting: Jesse Good and Avalon Jennings, Analysts, Library of Parliament.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, the committee continued its study of the Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore petroleum industry.
WITNESSES (by videoconference):
Canada Energy Regulator:
Darren Christie, Chief Economist, Transparency and Strategic Engagement;
Keith Landra, Chief Safety Officer, Technical Excellence;
Mike Johnson, Technical Leader, Energy Supply and Data.
As an individual:
Wesley Foote, Professional Engineer (Retired).
Darren Christie and Wesley Foote each made a statement and, together with Mike Johnson and Keith Landra, answered questions.
At 9:01 a.m., the committee suspended.
At 9:07 a.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to discuss a draft agenda (future business).
It was agreed that the committee allow the audio recording of the in camera portion of today’s meeting, that one copy be kept with the clerk of the committee for consultation by committee members and/or their staff, and that the audio recording be destroyed by the clerk of the committee when authorized to do so by the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, but no later than at the end of this parliamentary session.
At 10:03 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
