The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day at 8:01 a.m., in room B30, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Joan Kingston, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Arnot, Aucoin, Fridhandler, Galvez, Kingston, Lewis, McCallum, Miville-Dechêne, Verner, P.C., Wells (Newfoundland and Labrador) and Youance (11).

Participating in the meeting: Jesse Good and Avalon Jennings, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, the committee continued its study of the Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore petroleum industry.

WITNESS:

Memorial University of Newfoundland:

Kristopher Drodge, Head, School of Maritime Studies, Fisheries and Marine Institute.

Kristopher Drodge made a statement and answered questions.

At 9:09 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:13 a.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to discuss a draft agenda (future business).

It was agreed that the committee allow the audio recording of the in camera portion of today’s meeting, that one copy be kept with the clerk of the committee for consultation by committee members and/or their staff, and that the audio recording be destroyed by the clerk of the committee when authorized to do so by the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, but no later than at the end of this parliamentary session.

At 9:56 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:57 a.m., the committee resumed in public.

It was agreed that the following special study budget application for a fact-finding mission to Newfoundland and Labrador, for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:

At 9:58 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
