OTTAWA, Dec. 9, 2017 - The Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration has released the following statement following the Winnipeg travel claim appeal by Senator Marilou McPhedran at the Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017 meeting of the committee:

“We thank Senator McPhedran and her witnesses for their presentations, as well as all members of the Internal Economy Committee for their consideration of this appeal. We respect the decision of the Committee to decline reimbursement to Senator McPhedran.

It is important to note that all Senators, if they take issue with a decision regarding the admissibility of any of their expense claims, have the right to publicly present an appeal to the Internal Economy Committee; if they do not find the decision of the Committee satisfactory, they may further appeal to the Senate as a whole, again in full view of the public.

The public process we have undertaken on this matter is a notable hallmark of the Senate’s commitment to ensure transparency, efficiency and accountability in all our operations.”

- Senator Larry Campbell, Chair, and Senator Denise Batters, Deputy Chair, Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration
