QUESTION PERIOD — Finance
Federal Fiscal Deficit--Economy
May 1, 2020
My question is for the Leader of the Government in the Senate. Canadians are increasingly concerned about the growing deficit and debt and about how we are going to repay all of it. Yesterday, the Parliamentary Budget Officer stated that the deficit will hit $252 billion for the 2020-21 fiscal year. This amount will increase as new programs are announced, and government debt could reach $1 trillion.
Leader, can you confirm the estimated amount of the deficit? When will the Minister of Finance table his budget?
Thank you for the question. It is very clear that the deficit is growing. Fortunately, we have the capacity to fund measures to protect Canadians and the economy because of the efforts of previous governments. That will ensure that we get through this. When the economy and life get back on track, we will be able to return to a stable fiscal situation.
