QUESTION PERIOD — Crown-Indigenous Relations

Consultation with Indigenous Peoples

October 20, 2026

Senator Moreau, this question comes from the Southern Chiefs’ Organization.

Next week, the Prime Minister of Canada will host a First Nations-First Ministers’ Meeting to discuss issues of national importance. This meeting has been proclaimed as historic and an opportunity to support dialogue and establish shared priorities between First Nations, the federal government and the provincial and territorial governments.

Does the Government of Canada plan to live-stream this historic gathering, as it needs to be part of the public record to foster a stronger sense of reconciliation between First Nations, the Government of Canada and the provinces and territories of this nation?

Hon. Pierre Moreau (Government Representative in the Senate) [ - ]

I have had many opportunities to answer that kind of question. It is a strong commitment of the government to work as a partner with First Nations Chiefs and communities across Canada.

I don’t have the details of those meetings, but I will certainly raise with the Office of the Prime Minister the question that you have asked today. I know that the idea is to continue toward reconciliation. That is a strong commitment of the Prime Minister, and I’m sure he will abide by it.

I would also urge the Prime Minister to expand the participation and inclusion of First Nations Chiefs in the First Nations-First Ministers’ Meeting to maximize the opportunity of this historic occasion.

Senator Moreau [ - ]

I understand that is a recommendation you are making and will bring it to the Prime Minister’s attention.
