Senator André Pratte


André Pratte joined the Senate in 2016. In his previous career, he was a journalist for more than 35 years, including 30 years at La Presse where he was editor-in-chief from 2001 to 2015.

André has authored and co-authored a number of publications on journalism, politics, and history. His most recent book is a biography of Sir Wilfrid Laurier (Boréal, 2017).

André Pratte was one of 12 prominent Quebecers, led by former premier Lucien Bouchard, who signed the 2005 manifesto Pour un Québec lucide [For a Clear-Eyed Vision of Quebec].

In 2007, he coordinated Reconquérir le Canada – Un nouveau projet pour la nation québécoise [Reconquering Canada: A New Project for the Quebec Nation], a collection of essays written by 14 individuals from a range of political and professional backgrounds promoting a new way for Quebecers to consider Quebec’s place within Canada.

He was also the co-founder of The Federal Idea, a non-partisan think tank on federalism.
In 2007, 2008, and 2010, he won in the Editorial category of the National Newspaper Awards.
