Senate Speaker pays tribute to our veterans
Speaker of the Senate George J. Furey is encouraging all Canadians to hold in their hearts the men and women in uniform who have served our country.
In a video message, the Speaker explains how their bravery can inspire us to meet the challenges of today with courage and resolve.
Despite the pandemic, the Senate is honouring veterans in a number of ways.
From October 30 to November 11, 2020, the Senate is hosting the Virtual Poppy Drop, where images of poppies are projected onto the side of the Senate of Canada Building in memory of the fallen.
A ceremonial poppy flag was also raised in front of the building.
In addition, senators have recognized five heroes who made important contributions to Canada.
- Senator Robert Black honours his cousin, Robert John Black, who fought in the First World War
- Senator Yonah Martin honours Roland Clinton Bacon, a member of the top-secret Special Operations Executive
- Senator Pierre J. Dalphond honours Joseph-Amable Dubé, a veteran of the Second World War and the Korean War
- Senator Margaret Dawn Anderson honours Qapik Attagutsiak for her domestic support for the war effort during the Second World War
- Senator Rosemary Moodie honours Mark Anthony Graham, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan
