The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met at 3:30 p.m. this day, the Chairman, the Honourable Ronald D. Ghitter, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Buchanan, Carstairs, Cochrane, Ghitter, Hays, Kenny, Rompkey, Spivak, Taylor and Whelan.(11)

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Kinsella.(1)

The committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated Tuesday, December 17, 1996, proceeded to consider Bill C-29, An Act to regulate interprovincial trade in and the importation for commercial purposes of certain manganese-based substances.

Mr. Landry, Mr. Hutchins Mr. Darkes and Mr. Nantais all made opening statements and, together with the other witnesses, answered questions.

Mr. Owada, Mr. Nakatani, Mr. Shimizu and Mr. Lieb all made opening statements and, together with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 6:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
