The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:15 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Tkachuk, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Tkachuk, Cools, De Bané, Forest, Lavoie-Roux, Maheu, Mercier, Rizzuto and Stratton (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Forrestall.

In attendance from the Library of Parliament, Research Branch: Guy Beaumier.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Transport:

Paul Gauvin, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister;

Jim Lynes, Director General, Financial Management.

Pursuant to its Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 20, 1996, the Committee resumed its examination on Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1997.

Mr. Gauvin made opening remarks following which he and Mr. Lynes answered questions.

At a later date the Department of Transport will provide written responses to questions asked by the Honourable Senators Lavoie-Roux and Tkachuk.

At 6:45: p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
