The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:15 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Tkachuk, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Tkachuk, Bolduc, Cools, De Bané, Landry, Lavoie-Roux, Mercier, Moore, Rizzuto and Stratton (10).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator MacDonald.

In attendance from the Library of Parliament, Research Branch: Guy Beaumier.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Justice:

George Thomson, Deputy Minister;

Thea Herman, Sector Chief, Policy Sector;

Harold Sandell, Legal Counsel, Judicial Affairs.

Pursuant to its Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 20, 1996, the Committee resumed its examination on Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1997.

Mr. Thomson made opening remarks following which, he and Ms Herman and Mr. Sandell answered questions.

At a later date the Department of Justice will provide written responses to questions asked by the Honourable Senators MacDonald, Cools and Tkachuk.

At 7:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
