The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:15 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Tkachuk, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Tkachuk, Cools, De Bané, Landry, Mercier, Rizzuto and Stratton (7).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Nolin.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament, Research Branch: Guy Beaumier.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Treasury Board of Canada:

David Miller, Assistant Secretary, Expenditure Management Sector;

Norm Everest, Special Advisor, Estimates Division, Program Branch.

Pursuant to its Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 24, 1996, the Committee examined Supplementary Estimates (A), laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1997.

Mr. Miller made opening remarks and answered question.

At a later date Treasury Board will provide written responses to questions asked by the Honourable Senator Tkachuk

It is moved by the Honourable Senator De Bané that the report of the Committee on Supplementary Estimates (A), 1996-97, be presented by the Chair to the Senate.

At 6:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
