The Subcommittee on Post-Secondary education met at 9:05 a.m. this day in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Deputy Chair, the Honourable Thérèse Lavoie-Roux, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, DeWare, Forest, Hervieux-Payette, Lavoie-Roux, Losier-Cool and Perrault (7).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Cogger (1).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, June 19, 1996, the subcommittee resumed its consideration of the inquiry on the serious state of Post-Secondary education in Canada (for full text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Subcommittee dated August 6, 1996, Issue No. 1 ).

The student leaders made opening statements and answered questions.

At 10:03 a.m., Louis-Gabriel Bordeleau made an opening statement and, together with Jean-Guy Rioux, answered questions. Professor Bordeleau tabled four documents with the Clerk, as follows:

(a) Document entitled Symposium, L'école française et l'identité culturelle, Symposium régional de l'Ontario réalisé en partenariat avec la Faculté d'éducation de l'Université d'Ottawa, 22 et 23 février 1996, retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 12 "31";

(b) Document entitled Symposium, L'école française et l'identité culturelle, Symposium régional de l'Ouest réalisé en partenariat avec la Faculté d'éducation du Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface, 12 et 13 avril 1996, retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 12 "32";

(c) Document entitled Symposium, L'école française et l'identité culturelle, Symposium régional du Québec réalisé en partenariat avec la Famille d'éducation de l'Université du Québec à Montréal, 2 et 3 mai 1996, retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 12 "33"; and

(d) Document entitled Symposium, L,école française et l'identité culturelle, Symposium régional de l'Atlantique réalisé en partenariat avec l'Université Sainte-Anne de Pointe-de-l'église en Nouvelle-Écosse et la Faculté des sciences de l'éducation de l'Université de Moncton, 31 mai et 1er juin 1996, retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 12 "34".

At 11:05 a.m., Richard Landry made an opening statement and, together with Mario Laforest, answered questions.

At 11:40 a.m. Léon Germain, Eric Tétrault and Alexis Deschênes made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 12:28 p.m., the meeting was suspended.

At 1:05 p.m., the meeting resumed.

Oliva Bouchard made an opening statement and, together with Jean-François Beaudet, answered questions.

At 2:10 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
