In accordance with Rule 89, the Committee of Selection held its organization meeting this day at 9:00 a.m.
Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Berntson, Corbin, Hébert, Kinsella, MacDonald (Halifax), Olson, Petten, Phillips and Stanbury (9).
In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to Rule 89, the Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of the Chairman.
The Honourable Senator Kinsella moved, - That the Honourable Senator Hébert do take the Chair of this Committee.
The question being put on the motion, - it was agreed.
The Chairman made opening remarks.
The Honourable Senator Olson moved, - That the Honourable Senator Ottenheimer be nominated Speaker pro tempore.
The question being put on the motion, - it was agreed.
The Honourable Senator Corbin moved, - That the Chairman report to the Senate the nomination of Senator Ottenheimer as Speaker pro tempore.
The question being put on the motion, - it was agreed.
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Senate Committee on Privileges, Standing Rules and Orders.
The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Bosa, Doyle, *Fairbairn (or Graham), Gauthier, Grafstein, Grimard, Lewis, *Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), Maheu, Milne, Murray, Ottenheimer, Petten, Robertson, Robichaud, Rompkey and Rossiter be nominated to the Committee on Privileges, Standing Rules and Orders..
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.
The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Cochrane, Cohen, Davey, De Bané, Di Nino, *Fairbairn (or Graham), Forrestall, Gauthier, Kenny, LeBreton, *Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), Milne, Nolin, Petten, Poulin, Stollery and Wood be nominated to the Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bacon, Bolduc, Carney, Corbin, Doody, *Fairbairn (or Graham), Gauthier, Grafstein, *Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), MacEachen, Ottenheimer, Stewart and Stollery be nominated to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Senate Committee on National Finance.
The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Bolduc, Cools, De Bané, Eyton, *Fairbairn (or Graham), Kelly, Losier-Cool, *Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), Maheu, Pearson, Poulin, Rizzuto, Stratton and Tkachuk be nominated to the Senate Committee on National Finance.
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Senate Committee on Transport and Communications.
The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Adams, Atkins, Bacon, Davey, *Fairbairn (or Graham), Forrestall, Johnson, *Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), Oliver, Perrault, Petten, Poulin, Roberge and Roux be nominated to the Senate Committee on Transport and Communications.
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Beaudoin, Bryden, Carstairs, Corbin, Doyle, *Fairbairn (or Graham), Ghitter, Gigantès, Jessiman, Lewis, Losier-Cool, *Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), Nolin and Pearson be nominated to the Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce.
The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Angus, Austin, *Fairbairn (or Graham), Hervieux-Payette, Kelleher, Kenny, Kirby, Kolber, *Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), Meighen, Perrault, St. Germain, Simard and Stewart be nominated to the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce.
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology.
he Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Bonnell, Bosa, Cohen, Cools, De Ware, *Fairbairn (or Graham), Gigantès, Haidasz, Keon, Lavoie-Roux, Losier-Cool, *Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), Phillips and Rompkey be nominated to the Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology.
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry.
The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Fairbairn (or Graham), Gustafson, Hays, LeBreton, Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), Olson, Perrault, Phillips, Riel, Rivest, Rossiter, St. Germain, Sparrow and Spivak be nominated to the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry.
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Senate Committee on Fisheries.
The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Comeau, De Bané, Doody, *Fairbairn (or Graham), Jessiman, Landry, Losier-Cool, *Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), Marchand, Perrault, Petten, Robertson, Rossiter and Stewart be nominated to the Senate Committee on Fisheries.
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources.
The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Adams, Bacon, Buchanan, Carney, Cochrane, *Fairbairn (or Graham), Ghitter, Hays, Kenny, Kirby, *Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), Marchand, Rompkey and Spivak be nominated to the Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources.
The Committee proceeded with the nomination of Senators to serve on the Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples.
The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Petten moved, - That the Honourable Senators Anderson, Andreychuk, Beaudoin, Carstairs, *Fairbairn (or Graham), *Lynch-Staunton (or Berntson), Marchand, Milne, Pearson, Rivest, Roux, Tkachuk, Twinn and Watt be nominated to the Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples.
The Honourable Senator Olson, - That the Chairman report to the Senate the nominations agreed to at this day's meeting.
The question being put on the motion, - it was agreed.
The Honourable Senator Berntson moved, - That the Committee print 200 copies of its Proceedings.
The question being put on the motion, - it was agreed.
