The Subcommittee on the Boreal Forest of the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 5:08 p.m. this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Nicholas W. Taylor, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Spivak and Taylor (2).

In attendance: Ms Lynne Myers, Research Officer, Library of Parliament; Mr. David Newman, Communications Adviser.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference adopted in the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry on February 19, 1998, the subcommittee commenced its study to inquire into issues related to the harvest of the boreal forest and other matters relating to forestry which may be referred to it from time to time by the committee. (See Issue No. 1, February 19, 1998, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

Mr. David Barron, Senior Vice-President, Environment, Resources and Technology;

Ms Fiona Cook, Vice-President, International Trade and Government Relations;

Mr. Tony Rotherham, R.P.F.

From the Canadian Institute of Forestry:

Mr. Ralph W. Roberts, Past President;

Ms Roxanne Comeau, Executive Director.

From the Canadian Forestry Association:

Mr. Dan Cooligan, Manager, National Programs.

From the Ontario Professional Foresters Association:

Mr. Lorne Riley, R.P.F., Executive Counsellor.

The Chairman made an opening statement and introduced senators in attendance.

Mr. Barron, Ms Cook and Mr. Rotherham each made a presentation and answered questions.

At 6:20 p.m., the subcommittee suspended its meeting.

At 6:27 p.m., the subcommittee resumed its meeting.

Mr. Roberts made a presentation and, with Ms Comeau and Mr. Rotherham, answered questions.

Mr. Cooligan made a presentation and answered questions.

Mr. Riley made a presentation and answered questions.

At 8:00 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned.
