The Subcommittee on Communications of the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met at 3:35 p.m. this day, the Chair, the Honourable Marie-P. Poulin, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Johnson, Perrault, Poulin and Spivak (4).

In attendance: Terrence J. Thomas, Research Officer, Economics Division, Research Branch, Library of Parliament; and Matthew Fraser, Special advisor to the Subcommittee.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Canadian Conference of the Arts:

Mireille Gagné, President; and

Keith Kelly, National Director.

The subcommittee continued to consider Canada's international competitive position in communications as authorized by the Senate on October 29, 1997 and the committee on October 30, 1997.

The witnesses made a statement and answered questions.

The clerk of the subcommittee and the special advisor reported to the subcommittee their findings of the mission to California.

At 5:10 p.m., the subcommittee proceeded in camera.

At 5:20 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
