The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met at 6:10 p.m. this day, in room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Mira Spivak, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Christensen, Cochrane, Finnerty, Kenny and Spivak (6).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Lois Wilson (1).

In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated December 1, 1999, proceeded to examine such issues as may arise from time to time relating to energy, the environment, and natural resources generally in Canada (Nuclear Reactors Safety). (See Issue No. 2, December 7, 2000, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

Irene Kock, Executive Director.

From Power Workers' Union:

John Murphy, President;

Terry Pigeau, Vice President;

Peter Falconer, Chair of the PWU Health, Safety and Environment Committee;

Jim Beggs, Sector 1 Board Member, Darlington Nuclear Station;

Dennis Fry, Sector 1 Board Member, Bruce Nuclear Station;

Charlie Gill, Sector 1 Board Member, Pickering Nuclear Station.

The witnesses made a presentation and answered questions.

The committee proceeded in camera at 8:00 p.m. to discuss future business.

It was agreed -- That the steering committee be authorized to prepare a revised budget application for its special study for submission to the Internal Economy Committee.

At 8:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
