The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day, in camera at 8:10 a.m. in Subcommittee room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Colin Kenny, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Cordy, Day, Forrestall, Kenny, LaPierre, Meighen and Wiebe (8).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer; Major General (Ret'd) Keith McDonald; from the Senate Committee's Branch: Denis Robert, Committee Clerk and Till Heyde, Committee Clerk; Lieutenant-Colonel D.M. Belovich; and from the Office of Senator Kenny: Veronica Morris.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, April 16, 2002, the committee proceeded upon its examination on the need for a national security policy for Canada.

10:30 a.m. — 12:00 p.m.
From the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers:
Mr. Dave McLeod, Lead Station Attendant;
Mr. Rob Deemert, Cabin Security;
Mr. Paul Lefebvre, President, Local Lodge 2323.
At 8:10 a.m., the committee considered a draft agenda.
At 9:06 a.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 9:10 a.m., the committee continued its meeting in public in room 160-S.
Mr. Till Heyde, Committee Clerk, a person appointed by the Speaker of the Senate to administer an oath to witnesses pursuant to the Parliament of Canada Act, R.S.C. 1985, C. P-1, S. 13(1)(c), administered the oath to Messrs McInenly, Johns, and Stiff in the form prescribed by the Act.
Mr. McInenly made a statement and, with Messrs Johns and Stiff, answered questions.
At 10:47 a.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 10:55 a.m., the committee resumed.
Mr. Till Heyde, Committee Clerk, a person appointed by the Speaker of the Senate to administer an oath to witnesses pursuant to the Parliament of Canada Act, R.S.C. 1985, C. P-1, S. 13(1)(c), administered the oath to Messrs McLeod, Deemert and Lefebvre in the form prescribed by the Act.
Messrs McLeod, Deemert and Lefebvre made individual statements and answered questions.
Pursuant to the motion adopted on May 6, the following exhibits were filed with the Clerk:
