The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment, and Natural Resources met at 10:00 a.m. this day, in the Jasper/Lake Louise Room of the Delta Edmonton South Hotel, the Chair, the Honourable Nicholas W. Taylor, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Kenny, Spivak, and Taylor (4).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Lynne Myers, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on March 1st, 2001, the Committee proceeded to examine issues as may arise from time to time relating to energy, the environment and natural resources, including the continuation and completion of the study on Nuclear Reactor Safety. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, February 22, Tuesday, February 27 and Thursday, March 22, 2001, for full text of the Order of Reference).

WITNESSES:

From the Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development:

Thomas Marr-Laing, Director, Energy Watch Program;

Chris Seversou-Baker, Environmental Policy Analyst, Energy Watch Program;

Dr. Mary Griffiths, Environmental Policy Analyst.

From EPCOR Utilities Inc.:

David Lewin, Senior Vice President, Sustainable Development;

Tim Boston, Director, Government Affairs.

The witnesses made presentations and answered questions.

The witnesses from EPCOR Utilities Inc. submitted a brief.

The witnesses from the Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development tabled the following documents with the Clerk of the Committee:

(f) Booklet entitled Cool Business Guide, Lower Costs, Higher Productivity and Climate Change Solutions, March 2001, filed as Exhibit No. 5900-1.37/E1-SS-1, 4 "6";

(g) A three-ring binder containing a document entitled A Climate Change Resource Book for Journalists, September 2000, filed as Exhibit No. 5900-1.37/E1-SS-1, 4 "7".

At 12:12 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
