The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 7:00 p.m. in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald J. Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Comeau, Cook, Gill, Meighen, Robertson, Tunney, Watt (7).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, the Committee continued its examination upon the matters relating to the fishing industry. (See Issue No. 1, March 20, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.).

WITNESSES:

From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada:

Johanne Gélinas, Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development;

John Reed, Principal;

Gordon Stock, Director;

Neil Maxwell, Principal.

Ms Gélinas made a statement and with Mr. Reed, Mr. Stock and Mr. Maxwell answered questions.

It was agreed — That the letter of December from the Auditor General regarding a response to the Committee's report on aquaculture would be appended to the proceedings.

At 8:50 p.m., the meeting continued in camera.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Watt, — That the committee seek the following Order of Reference:

That the Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries be authorized to examine and report upon the matters relating to oceans and fisheries;

That the papers and evidence received and taken on the subject during the First Session of the Thirty-seventh Parliament be referred to the committee;

That the committee submit its final report no later thanJune 30, 2003; and

That the committee be permitted, notwithstanding usual practices, to deposit any report with the Clerk of the Senate, if the Senate is not then sitting; and that the report be deemed to have been tabled in the Chamber.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted in the affirmative.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Cook, — That pending receipt of an order of reference from the Senate for a study on oceans and fisheries, the committee adopt in principle a budget application of $261,341.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted in the affirmative.

At 9:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
