The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 9:15 a.m., in Montreal, the Chair, the Honourable Lise Bacon, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bacon, Biron, Callbeck, Jaffer, LaPierre, Oliver and Phalen (7).

In attendance: Joseph Dion, Researcher for the Library of Parliament and Martin Brennan, Special Advisor to the Committee.

Also in attendance: The official reporters for the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on September 26, 2001, the committee proceeded with the examination of issues facing the intercity busing industry (See Issue No. 21, Monday, February 11, 2002, Tuesday, February 12, 2002, Wednesday, February 13, 2002, for full text of the Order of Reference).

WITNESSES:

From Intercar:

Hugo Gilbert, Director General;

Romain Girard, Executive Vice-President, Quebec Bus Owners Association.

From Kéroul:

André Leclerc, Director General;

Johanne St-Martin, Transport-Development Assistant.

The witnesses from Intercar and from Kéroul made a presentation and answered questions.

At 11:07 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:15 a.m., the committee resumed.

From Solidarité rurale du Québec:

Jean-Pierre Fournier, member of the executive;

Anne-Marie Rainville, Director of Public Affairs.

The witnesses from Solidarité rurale du Québec made a presentation and answered questions.

Kéroul, Solidarité rurale du Québec and Intercar submitted a brief.

At 12:10 p.m., it was agreed — That the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

It was agreed — That the following budget application for legislation be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.

Other Expenditures   $ 700
Total  $ 69,900

It was agreed — That the following budget application for its Special Study be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.

Transportation and Communications  $ 52,525
Other Expenditures  $ 2,000
Total  $ 70,725

The witnesses from Transport 2000 Quebec and Conseil regional de développement de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue made a presentation and answered questions.

At 2:25, the committee suspended.

At 2:35, the committee resumed.

The witnesses from the Quebec Bus Owners Association, Motor Coach Canada, the Canadian Bus Association and the Ontario Motor Coach Association made a presentation and answered questions.

The Canadian Bus Association, Motor Coach Canada, the Ontario Motor Coach Association, the Quebec Bus Owners Association and the Conseil regional de développement de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue submitted a brief.

At 3:50 p.m., It was agreed — That the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
