The Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met at 5:45 p.m., this day, in room 172-E, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Michael A. Meighen, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Day, Meighen and Wiebe (4).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Forrestall (1).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer; Keli Hogan, Legislative Clerk.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 4, 2001, the committee commenced its examination on the health care provided to veterans of war and of peacekeeping missions; the implementation of the recommendations made in its previous reports on such matters; and the terms of service, post-discharge benefits and health care of members of the regular and reserve forces as well as members of the RCMP and of civilians who have served in close support of uniformed peacekeepers.

Mr. Matthew Coon Come, National Chief, Assembly of First Nations;

Mr. Larry Whiteduck, Coordinator for First Nations Veterans Social Development.

From the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations:

Mr. Perry Bellegarde, Federation of Saskatchewan, Indian Nations Chief and AFN Vice Chief;

Ms Paulette Tremblay, National Liaison for the Chiefs of Saskatchewan.

From the First Nations Veterans Roundtable:

Mr. Howard Anderson, Chair of the First Nations Veterans Roundtable and Grand Chief of First Nations Veterans.

From the Saskatchewan Indian Veterans Association:

Mr. Tony Coté, Veterans Coordinator.

Mr. Coon Come made a statement and with Mr. Larry Whiteduck answered questions.

Mr. Bellegarde made a statement and with Ms Paulette Tremblay answered questions.

Mr. Anderson made a statement and with Mr. Coté answered questions.

It was agreed - That the material of the Assembly of First Nations be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the committee (Exhibit 6050 V1-SS-1, 3 "3").

It was agreed - That the material of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the committee (Exhibit 6050 V1-SS-1, 3 "4").

At 7:10 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
