The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day in room 705, Victoria Building at 5:35 p.m., the Acting Chair, the Honourable Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Fraser, Gustafson, Hubley, LaPierre, LeBreton, Oliver and Tkachuk (8).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Lori Srivastava and Frédéric Forge.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 31, 2002, the committee began to consider the impact of climate change on Canada's agriculture, forests and rural communities and the potential adaptation options focusing on primary production, practices, technologies, ecosystems and other related areas. (For a complete text of Order of Reference see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Mr. Robert Mendelsohn, Professor.
From the Massachusetts Institute of Technology:
Mr. John Reilly, Associate Director of Research.
The Clerk of the Committee informed the Honourable Senators of the unavoidable absence of the Chair and proceeded, pursuant to rule 85(1)(a) to the election of an Acting Chair.
The Clerk presided over the election of the Acting Chair.
The Honourable Senator LaPierre moved, — That the Honourable Senator Gustafson be the Acting Chair for today's committee meeting.
The question being put on the motion, — it was agreed.
The Honourable Senator Gustafson assumed the Chair and made opening remarks.
Robert Mendelsohn made a presentation and answered questions.
John Reilly made a presentation and answered questions.
At 7:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
