The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 4:32 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Mercer, Oliver, Peterson and Stratton (7).

In attendance: Frédéric Forge, Marc Leblanc, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, the committee continued its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry in Canada. (For complete text of the Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

APPEARING:

The Honourable Chuck Strahl, P.C., M.P., Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

WITNESSES:

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada:

Christiane Ouimet, Associate Deputy Minister.

Canadian Food Inspection Agency:

François Guimont, President.

Minister Strahl made a statement and, together with Ms. Ouimet and Mr. Guimont, answered questions.

At 6:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, the committee continued its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry in Canada. (For complete text of the Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Canadian Wheat Board:

Ken Ritter, Chair of the Board of Directors;

Adrian Measner, Chief Executive Officer;

Victor Jarjour, Chief Representive — Trade.

Mr. Ritter made a statement and, together with Messrs Measner and Jarjour, answered questions.

At 7:24 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee met in camera to consider its draft agenda.

It was agreed that the analysts prepare a draft interim report based on the discussion at this meeting.

At 7:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
