The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 7:13 p.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Kenny, Mahovlich, Mitchell, Oliver, Segal and Tkachuk (8).
In attendance: Frédéric Forge, Marc Leblanc, Marc-André Pigeon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 the committee began its consideration of rural poverty in Canada.
In accordance with rule 92(2)(e), the committee considered its draft future agenda in camera.
At 8 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting in public.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, the committee continued its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)
The committee considered the following draft budget application:
Professional and Other Services $ 6,000 Transportation and Communications 300 All Other Expenditures 2,000 TOTAL $ 8,300
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Segal that the draft budget concerning the study on the present state and future of agriculture in the amount of $ 8,300 be adopted and that the Chair present the same to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, the committee commenced its consideration of rural poverty in Canada.
The committee considered the following draft budget application:
Professional and Other Services $ 133,285 Transportation and Communications 299,460 All Other Expenditures 33,000 TOTAL $ 465,745
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Mahovlich that the draft budget concerning the study on rural poverty in the amount of $ 465,745 be adopted and that the Chair present the same to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
It was agreed that, when possible, the committee meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evenings.
It was agreed that the committee request from the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration sole-sourcing exemption in regards to a line item on the committee's budget for its study on rural poverty.
At 8:19 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Ms. Tingley, together with Ms. Frost and Ms. Shular, made a statement and answered questions.
