The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 7:03 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Fairbairn, P.C., Hubley, Mahovlich, Meighen, Merchant, Oliver, St. Germain, P.C. and Trenholme-Counsell (8).

In attendance: Marc Leblanc and Marc-André Pigeon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 the committee continued its consideration of rural poverty in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 6.)

WITNESSES:

Canadian Associations of Food Banks:

Charles Seiden, Executive Director;

Michael Bay, Member of the Board of Directors.

Regina and District Food Bank:

Wayne Hellquist, Chief Executive Officer.

Feed Nova Scotia:

Dianne Swinemar, Executive Director.

Mr. Hellquist, Ms. Swinemar and Mr. Seiden each made a statement and together with Mr. Bay answered questions.

At 8:46 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
