The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 7:04 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Mahovlich, Mercer, Mitchell, Peterson and Segal (8).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Di Nino (1).
In attendance: Marc Leblanc and Marc-André Pigeon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 the committee continued its consideration of rural poverty in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 6.)
WITNESSES:
Neighbours Alliance of North York (by videoconference):
Sue Rickards, Member of the Board.
Ms. Rickards made a statement and answered questions.
At 8:01 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 8:05 p.m., the committee resumed.
Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency:
Eleanor King, Director General, Community Development;
Sadie Perron, Director, Community Development.
Ms. King made a statement and, together with Ms. Perron, answered questions.
At 9:06 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 9:08 p.m., the committee resumed.
In accordance with rule 92(2)(e), the committee considered its draft future agenda.
The committee discussed its plans for travel within Canada in 2007.
It was agreed to invite former Senator Archibald Hynd Johnstone to sit at the table when the committee is in Prince Edward Island, but not to ask questions.
It was agreed to postpone Quebec trip to 2007-2008 fiscal year.
At 9:26 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
