The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 7:02 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Biron, Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Mahovlich, Mercer, Oliver, Segal, St. Germain, P.C. and Zimmer (10).

In attendance: Marc Leblanc and Marc-André Pigeon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 the committee continued its consideration of rural poverty in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 6.)

WITNESSES:

Municipality of Powassan:

Bob Young, Mayor;

Roger George, Chair, Economic Development Committee.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Mr. George made a statement and, together with Mr. Young, answered questions.

At 8:28 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:33 p.m., the committee resumed.

At 8:33 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee proceeded in camera to discuss a draft agenda.

It was agreed that the committee travel to Nicolet, Quebec, on May 17-18, 2007 and to Maniwaki, Quebec, on June 7-8, 2007.

At 9:19 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

At 9:13 a.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Hunter and Ms. Skotnitsky each made a statement and together answered questions.

At 10:16 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
