The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 8:43 a.m., this day, in room L.J. Fortin, in the Centre régional de loisirs culturels de Kapuskasing, Ontario, the Chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Mahovlich, Peterson and Segal (5).
In attendance: Marc Leblanc, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 the committee continued its consideration of rural poverty in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 6.)

The Chair made an opening statement.
It was agreed that Mr. Brent St. Denis, M.P., Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, be invited to make an opening statement.
Mr. St. Denis made an opening statement.
Ms. Guertin and Mr. Lafontaine each made a statement and, together, answered questions.
At 9:45 a.m., the committee suspended.
At 9:51 a.m., the committee resumed.
Ms. Bordeleau and Mr. Guillemette each made a statement and, together, answered questions.
At 10:46 a.m., the committee suspended.
At 11:02 a.m., the committee resumed.
Ms. Thomson and Ms. Comeau made a statement and answered questions.
At 12:17 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
