The Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met this day at 6 p.m. in room 160-S of the Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Hugh Segal, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Corbin, Cowan, De Bané, P.C., Di Nino, Downe, Mahovlich, Merchant, Segal and Stollery (10).

Also present: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Peter Berg, Analyst.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 9, 2006, the committee proceeded to examine such issues as may arise from time to time relating to foreign relations generally.

WITNESSES:

European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Parliamentary Committee:

Gudlaugur Thór Thórdarson, M.P., Iceland, Head of Delegation;

Svein Roald Hansen, M.P., Norway, Deputy Head of Delegation;

Franz J. Heeb, M.P., Liechtenstein;

Mario Fehr, M.P., Switzerland;

Andri Lúthersson, Secretary to the Committee.

The Chairman made a statement.

Mr. Thórdarson made a presentation and, along with Messrs. Hansen, Heeb and Fehr, answered questions.

At 6:49 p.m., the committee suspended its proceedings.

At 6:56 p.m., the committee reconvened in camera, in accordance with rule 92(2)(e), to consider a draft order of reference.

It was agreed that senators' assistants be permitted to attend the meeting.

At 7:36 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 24, 2006, the committee continued to examine and report on the evacuation of Canadian citizens from Lebanon in July 2006. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 6, November 1, 2006.)
