The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Brown, Callbeck, Cochrane, Cook, Cordy, Eggleton, P.C., Keon, Munson, Pépin and Trenholme Counsell (10).

In attendance: Eleanor Fast, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 29, 2007, the committee began its examination of issues relating to the federal government's new Science and Technology (S&T) Strategy — Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada's Advantage. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

Canadian Institute of Health Research:

Pierre Chartrand, Acting President.

Mr. Best and Mr. Brenders each made a statement and responded to questions.

At 5:03 p.m., Ms. Fortier, Mr. Phillipson and Mr. Chartrand made a statement and responded to questions.

At 6:15 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
