Proceedings of the Standing Senate Committee on
Transport and Communications
Issue 5 - Evidence, September 16, 2009
OTTAWA, Wednesday, September 16, 2009
The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 6:30 p.m. to elect the chair of the committee.
[English]
Vanessa Moss-Norbury, Clerk of the Committee: Honourable senators, I see a quorum. As clerk of your committee it is my duty to preside over the election of the chair. I am ready to receive a motion to that effect.
Senator Johnson: I nominate Senator Dawson.
Ms. Moss-Norbury: It is moved by the Honourable Senator Johnson that the Honourable Senator Dawson do take the chair of this committee. Is it your pleasure, honourable senators, to adopt the motion?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
[Translation]
Ms. Moss-Norbury: I declare the motion carried and invite the Honourable Senator Dawson to take the chair.
The Chair: I will be very brief. First of all, I would like to thank you for your confidence in me and also thank the leadership of my caucus for their confidence and support.
At this time, I would also like to thank Senator Bacon who has chaired this committee for the past several years. She has indeed set the bar high with her exemplary work and leadership.
[English]
To try to follow in the footsteps of Senator Bacon is a challenge for me since I have known and worked with her for over 40 years. When I joined the provincial Liberals in the late 1960s, she was already president of the women's wing and later became president of the party. Our paths have crossed constantly over the years, and we have always aimed at working together for the public good.
[Translation]
Thank you, Senator Bacon. We will of course continue to examine the issues related to the wireless industry in Canada. I assume some of you already have some ideas of possible future topics of discussion and later I will be asking you to share them with us.
First off, we need to look at our upcoming meetings here in Ottawa and across the country and discuss our planned schedule of hearings on the wireless industry.
[English]
If I may, honourable senators, we should go in camera and talk about future business. It will not be very long. I think it will be pretty short, but I prefer we do it in camera and come back and decide future business after that.
Is it agreed?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
(The committee continued in camera.)
