The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day at 11:31 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, for the purpose of holding its reorganization meeting, pursuant to the order of the Senate of November 7, 2017.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Bernard, Brazeau, Campbell, Cordy, Ngo and Pate (8).

In attendance: Jean-Philippe Duguay, Erin Shaw, and Ryan van den Berg, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; Marcy Galipeau, Communications Officer, Senate Communications Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of the Senate of November 7, 2017, the clerk of the committee presided over the election of the chair.

The Honourable Senator Ataullahjan moved:

That the Honourable Senator Bernard do take the chair of this committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The Honourable Senator Bernard took the chair.

The chair made a statement.

The Honourable Senator Pate moved:

That the Honourable Senator Cordy be deputy chair of this committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The Honourable Senator Pate moved:

That the Honourable Senator Ataullahjan be deputy chair of this committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The Honourable Senator Pate moved:

That the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be composed of the chair and the two deputy chairs; and

That the subcommittee be empowered to make decisions on behalf of the committee with respect to its agenda, to invite witnesses, and to schedule hearings.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 11:36 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
