The official portrait of the Honourable George J. Furey.

The Honourable George J. Furey 2015-2023

The Senate commissions a portrait of every Speaker in recognition of the procedural, ceremonial and diplomatic importance of that role — a tradition that predates Confederation.

The Honourable George J. Furey, K.C., is a distinguished educator, lawyer, parliamentarian and community leader. A native of Newfoundland and Labrador, he enjoyed a decade-long career in education before pivoting to law. He has also given his time to numerous voluntary groups, professional boards and provincial commissions.

Mr. Furey was appointed to the Senate in 1999. He was appointed the 45th Speaker of the Upper Chamber in 2015 — the first from his home province — and served in the position until his retirement in 2023.

Mr. Furey selected prolific Newfoundland and Labrador artist Grant Boland to paint his portrait. Mr. Boland’s striking portraits, landscapes and still-life paintings bring his subjects to life through his mastery of colour, form and light. His work has been featured in many solo and group exhibitions.
