The Speech from the Throne
This watercolour-and-pencil drawing captures the scene outside the Senate of Canada Building during King Charles III’s visit in May 2025 to read the Speech from the Throne, opening Canada’s 45th Parliament.
The wide-angle composition presents a double scene. It combines the formal arrival of the dignitaries with the impromptu walkabout during which King Charles and Queen Camilla momentarily interrupted their procession to the National War Memorial to greet a crowd of cheering, flag-waving well-wishers.
Artist Geneviève L Richard, working from the roof of the hotel entrance across the street, wove together multiple sketches to create a perspective no single photograph could have captured.
Ms. Richard studied visual arts and graphic design at the Université du Québec en Outaouais. A versatile muralist and graphic designer, she works in a range of media including drawing, painting, digital art and photography.
