The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples, met at 10:06 a.m. this day in Room 356-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Landon Pearson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Anderson, Andreychuk, Beaudoin, Milne, Pearson, Taylor, Tkachuk, Twinn and Watt (10).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 18, 1997, the committee began its examination of Bill S-12, An Act providing for self-government by the first nations of Canada.

WITNESSES:

From Lesser Slave Lake Indian Regional Council:

Catherine Twinn, Legal Counsel;

Mike McKinney, Legal Counsel;

James Ryan, Legislative Drafter.

Ms Twinn and Mr. McKenny made a statement and with Mr. Ryan answered questions.

It was agreed that the Department of Veterans Affairs be allowed to submit a written report to the committee in response to the recommendations contained in the committee's report entitled "Aboriginal Soldier After the Wars".

It is the intention of the committee that the submission of the written report be followed by an appearance of departmental officials before the committee.

At 11:55 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
