The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:15 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Tkachuk, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Tkachuk, Bolduc, Cools, De Bané, Kelly, Losier-Cool, Poulin, Rizzuto and Stratton (9).
In attendance from the Parliamentary Centre: Dr. Edward J.D. Ketchum, Director of Research.
Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Nolin and Roux.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The Honourable Diane Marleau, P.C., M.P., Minister of Public Works and Government Services.

Ranald A. Quail, Deputy Minister;
Jim Stobbe, Assistant Deputy Minister, Operations Service Branch.
From the Department of Justice:
Lionel A. Levert, Chief Legislative Counsel, Legislative Services;
Andrée Dionne, Senior Counsel, Legislation Section.
Pursuant to its Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 28, 1996, the Committee began its examination of Bill C-7, an Act to establish the Department of Public Works and Government Services and to amend and repeal certain Acts. Act.
The Minister's statement was taken as read. She answered questions.
At 5:30 p.m. the Minister was called for a vote in the House of Commons.
Messers Quail, Stobbe, Levert and Ms Dionne, answered questions.
Following the vote in the House, the Minister attended the Committee at 5:55 p.m., and together with Mr. Quail, answered questions.
At a later date, the Department of Public Works and Government Services will provide written responses to questions asked by the Honourable Senator Tkachuk.
At 7:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
