The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:15 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Tkachuk, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Tkachuk, Cools, Di Nino, Forest, Kelly, Landry, Lavoie-Roux, Milne, Rizzuto, Stratton and Taylor (11)

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament, Research Branch: Guy Beaumier.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Marcel Massé, P.C., M.P., President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for Infrastructure.

WITNESSES:

From the Treasury Board of Canada:

V. Peter Harder, Secretary of the Treasury Board and Comptroller General of Canada;

David Miller, Assistant Secretary, Expenditure Management Sector.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 4, 1997, the committee began the examination of Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1998.

Mr. Massé made opening remarks and with Messrs Harder and Miller, answered questions.

At a later date, Treasury Board will provide written responses to the questions asked by the Honourable Senator Tkachuk.

At 7:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
