The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 9:05 a.m. in the Pavilion Crystal A Salon of the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia, the Chairman, the Honourable John B. Stewart, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bacon, Carney, Corbin, De Bané, Grafstein, Stewart, Stollery and St. Germain. (9)

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Austin and Perrault. (2)

Also present: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Mr. Anthony Chapman, Economics Division.

In attendance: Official Senate reporters.

WITNESSES:

Terry McGee, Professor, Director, The Institute of Asian Research, University of British Columbia;

Douglas A. Ross, Professor, Department of Political Science, Simon Fraser University;

Brian Job, Professor, The Institute of International Relations, University of British Columbia.

The committee resumed consideration of its order of reference pertaining to relations between Canada and the Asia Pacific region (See committee proceedings of October 2, 1996, Issue no. 8).

The witnesses made a presentation and answered questions.

At 12:35 p.m., the committee recessed for lunch.

At 1:55 p.m., the committee resumed sitting.
