The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 3:20 p.m. in Room 256-S of the Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable John B. Stewart, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Carney, Corbin, De Bané, Grafstein, Stewart and Stollery (7).
Also present: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Mr. Anthony Chapman, Economics Division.
In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate .
APPEARING:
Art Eggleton, Minister of International Trade.
WITNESS:
From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade:
Keith H. Christie, Assistant Deputy Minister, Federal-Provincial Relations, Chief Negotiator of the Agreement.
The committee considered Bill C-81, an Act to implement the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement and related agreements.
The Honourable Art Eggleton made a presentation and along with Mr. Christie, answered questions.
The witness announced that he would provide written answers to the questions raised by the Honourable Senators Andreychuk and Carney.
The committee undertook a clause-by-clause study of the bill.
Agreed -- That clauses 2 to 35 of the bill be adopted.
Agreed -- That the schedule be adopted.
Agreed -- That clause 1 be adopted.
Agreed -- That the preamble and title be adopted.
Agreed -- by the majority -- That Bill C-81 in its entirety be adopted without amendment.
Senator Stewart moved -- That the committee report Bill C-81 to the Senate without amendment.
Adopted unanimously.
The committee proceeded to consider its budget.
Senator Grafstein moved -- That the committee budget be adopted.
Adopted.
At 5:10 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
