The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 6:09 p.m., the Chair, the Honourable Senator Lise Bacon, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Anderson, Bacon, Forrestall, Grimard, Johnson, Mercier, Poulin, Roberge, Spivak and Watt. (11)

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Robichaud.

In attendance: Matthew W. Fraser, Expert Consultant; Monique Hébert, Research Officer, Research Branch, Library of Parliament; Marc Chénier, Committee Researcher.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 10, 1997, the committee resumed consideration of Bill C-32, An Act to amend the Copyright Act.

The witness from the Association littéraire et artistique canadienne made a statement and answered questions.

The witness from the Canadian Copyright Institute made a statement and answered questions.

The witnesses from the Canadian Conference of the Arts made a statement and answered questions.

It was agreed, -- That the presentation by the Canadian Conference of the Arts be filed with the Clerk of the Committee as Exhibit 5900 T1-2.35 /C-32, 15, "15".

The witness from the Association pour l'avancement des sciences et des techniques de la documentation made a statement and answered questions.

At 8:50 p.m., the committee was suspended.

At 8:57 p.m., the committee resumed.

The Honourable Senator Forrestall moved that the following budget application for the special study on Canada's international competitive position be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:

SUMMARY OF EXPENDITURES

Professional and Other Services $47,000

Transportation and Communications 4,200

Other Expenditures 500

Total $51,700

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
