OTTAWA, Thursday, April 26, 2001 (10) [English] The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 9:02 a.m. in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding. Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Fairbairn,, P.C., Gill, Gustafson, Hubley, Oliver, Stratton, Tkachuk and Tunney (9). Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Sparrow. In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering and Frédéric Forge. Also present: The official reporters of the Senate. Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001, the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada (For complete text of Order of Reference, see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No.2.). The Honourable Senator Oliver moved - That the committee defer a decision on invoking Rule 94. After discussion, the motion was withdrawn. After further discussion, it was agreed - That the committee defer its debate on Rule 94 to a future meeting. The Honourable Senator Oliver moved - That the committee proceed to discuss its future business in camera. The question being put on the motion, it was agreed. At 9:40 a.m., the committee went in camera for a discussion on future business. The committee discussed its future business. It was agreed - That the committee post on its website the June 1993 report entitled "Farm Stress: Its Economic Dimension, Its Human Consequences." At 10:31 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair. APPEARING: The Honourable Andy Mitchell, P.C., M.P., Secretary of State (Rural Development) (Federal Economic Development Initi ative for Northern Ontario) WITNESSES: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Diane Vincent, Associate Deputy Minister; Lynden Johnson, Executive Director, Rural Secretariat. Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001, the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada.
