(4) [English] The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment, and Natural Resources met in camera at 9:15 a.m. this day, in Room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Nicholas W. Taylor, presiding. Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Banks, Buchanan, P.C., Christensen, Cochrane, Eyton, Finnerty, Kelleher, P.C., Sibbeston, Spivak and Taylor (11). Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Watt (1). In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament, Lynne Myers, Research Officer. Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate. Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on March 1, 2001, the committee proceeded to examine issues as may arise from time to time relating to energy, the environment and natural resources, including the continuation and completion of the study on Nuclear Reactor Safety. (See Issue No.1, Thursday, February 22, Tuesday, February 27 and Thursday, March 22, 2001, for full text of the Order of Reference). It was agreed - That Senators' staff be allowed to remain in the room. The committee proceeded to the consideration of a draft report. It was agreed - That the draft report, subject to changes to be incorporated, be adopted as the interim report of the committee. It was agreed - That the steering committee monitor closely the DEVCO situation following the collapse of the negotiations with the potential buyer of the operations. Taylor, presiding. Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Banks, Kenny, Spivak, and Taylor (5). Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Lawson and St. Germain, P.C. (2). In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament, Lynne Myers, Research Officer. Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate. Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on March 1, 2001, the committee proceeded to study Bill S-15. WITNESSES: From the Canadian Cancer Society: Gerald Bonham, Health Consultant. From the American Cancer Society, California Division, Inc.: David E. Bonfilio, Past Chair. From the British Columbia Lung Association: Scott McDonald, Executive Director. The witnesses made presentations and answered questions. The witnesses from the David Suzuki Foundation, Ballard Power Systems, and B.C. Energy Aware Committee submitted briefs.
