The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 5:50 p.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Donald H. Oliver, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Hubley, Mercer, Oliver, Ringuette and St. Germain, P.C. (8).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge and Marc LeBlanc.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, February 16, 2004, the committee began its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Mr. Andrew Marsland, Assistant Deputy Minister, Market and Industry Services Branch;
Mr. Tom Richardson, A/Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy Branch;
Mr. Gilles Lavoie, Senior Director General, Operations, Market and Industry Services Branch.
From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency
Mr. Robert Carberry, Vice-President, Programs;
Mr. Brian Evans, Chief Veterinarian Officer for Canada.
The Chair made an opening statement.
