The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 5:35 p.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Donald H. Oliver, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Hubley, Lawson, Mercer, Oliver, Sparrow, St. Germain, P.C., and Tkachuk (10).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of parliament: Frédéric Forge and Marc Leblanc.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, February 16, 2004, the committee continued its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

From the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors:

Nick Jennery, President and Chief Executive Officer;

Kim McKinnon, Vice-President, Communications.

From Lakeside Packers Ltd.:

Garnett Altwasser, President.

From Levinoff Meat Products Ltd.:

Brian A. Read, General Manager.

From Cargill Foods:

Willie Van Solkema, Canadian Business Manager.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Jennery and Ms. McKinnon made a presentation and answered questions.

At 6:35 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:40 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Van Solkema, Mr. Read and Mr. Altwasser each made a presentation and answered questions.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 8:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Hubley, Lawson, Lynch-Staunton, Mercer, Oliver, Ringuette, Sparrow and St. Germain, P.C. (11).

Mr. Art Price and Mr. Doug Price made a presentation and answered questions.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 10:55 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
