The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 8:35 a.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Honourable Donald H. Oliver, Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Hubley, Lawson, Mercer, Oliver, Sparrow, St. Germain, P.C., and Tkachuk (9).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of parliament: Frédéric Forge and Marc Leblanc.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, February 16, 2004, the committee began to examine the issues related to the development and marketing of value-added agricultural, agri-food and forest products, on the domestic and international markets.

WITNESSES:

From Pulse Canada:

Gordon Bacon, Chief Executive Officer;

Jack Froese, Chair.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Bacon and Mr. Froese made a joint presentation and answered questions.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 10:15 a.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee proceeded in camera for consideration of its draft report.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Lawson, that the Steering Committee be empowered to make minor editorial changes to the interim on the present state and future of agriculture and forestry in Canada without changing the content.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Hubley, that the interim report be tabled with the Clerk of the Senate, if leave is granted by the Senate Chamber.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 10:20 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
