The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 9 a.m., this day, in the Joshua Bates Centre, 2nd Floor, in Athens, Ontario, the Chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Losier-Cool, Mercer and Segal (5).

In attendance: Marc Leblanc and Marc-André Pigeon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, the committee continued its consideration of rural poverty in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 6.)

The Chair made an opening statement.

Ms. MacLatchie, Ms. Bergman, Ms. Selkirk and Ms. Oickle each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 10 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:04 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Gatza, Ms. Baril and Ms. Prentice each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 11:04 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:17 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Kamenz, Mr. Beck and Ms. Monaghan each made a statement and, together with Mr. Wynands and Mr. French, answered questions.

At 12:08 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
