The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day in room 257, East Block, at 5:38 p.m., the Chair, the Honourable Tommy Banks, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Angus, Banks, Carney, P.C., Cochrane, Fox, P.C., Lavigne and Tardif (8).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Sam Banks, Frédéric Beauregard-Tellier and Lynne Myers.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, the committee continued its study on emerging issues related to its mandate. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Office of the Auditor General of Canada:

Johanne Gélinas, Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development;

Neil Maxwell, Principal;

Richard Arseneault, Principal;

David McBain, Director;

Kim Leach, Director.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Ms. Gélinas made a presentation and answered questions.

Mr. McBain, Mr. Arseneault and Mr. Maxwell answered questions.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 7:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, the committee continued its review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (1999, c. 33) pursuant to section 343(1) of the said act.
