The Senate Subcommittee on Cities met this day at 8:45 a.m., in the Guild East Room, Halifax Holiday Inn Select Halifax Centre, the chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Cordy, Eggleton, P.C., Munson, Segal and Trenholme Counsell (5).

In attendance: Brian O'Neal and Havi Echenberg, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 and delegated on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 by the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology, the subcommittee continued its examination of poverty, housing and homelessness. WITNESSES:

Lynn Hartwell, Executive Director, Policy and Information Management;

David Ryan, Executive Director, Employment Supports;

Kristen Tynes, Advisor, Communications.

Halifax Regional Municipality:

Geri Kaiser, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer;

Fred Wendt, Planner, Regional Planning.

City of Charlottetown:

Clifford J. Lee, Mayor.

Ms. Hartwell made a statement and, with Mr. Ryan and Ms. Tynes, responded to questions.

At 10:20 a.m., the subcommittee suspended.

At 10:35 a.m., the subcommittee resumed.

Ms. Kaiser made a statement and, with Mr. Wendt, responded to questions.

Mr. Lee made a statement and responded to questions.

At 12 p.m., it was agreed that the subcommittee adjourn to the call of the chair.

At 3 p.m., the subcommittee suspended.

At 3:15 p.m., the subcommittee resumed.

At 4:20 p.m., the subcommittee suspended.

At 4:25 p.m., the subcommittee resumed.

The chair invited members of the public to make statements.

Ms. Elderkin, Mr. Grace, Ms. Duffy, Mr. Mooney, Ms. Hanrahan and Mr. Smith each made a statement and responded to questions.

At 5:35 p.m., it was agreed that the subcommittee adjourn to the call of the chair.
