The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day, at 6:30 p.m., in room 256-S, Centre Block.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cochrane, Dawson, Fox, P.C., Housakos, Johnson, Mercer, Merchant and Zimmer (8).

In attendance: Terry Thomas and Allison Padova, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of the chair.

The Honourable Senator Johnson moved that the Honourable Senator Dawson do take the chair of this committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The Honourable Senator Dawson took the chair.

At 6:35 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee proceeded in camera to consider its draft agenda.

At 6:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day, at 9:30 a.m., in room 257, East Block, the chair, the Honourable Dennis Dawson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cochrane, Dawson, Housakos, Johnson, Mercer, Rompkey, P.C., and Wallace (7).

In attendance: Terry Thomas, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, the committee continued its study on the emerging issues related to its communications mandate and to report on the wireless sector. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association:

Bernard Lord, President and CEO;

Jim Patrick, Vice President, Government Affairs.

Industry Canada:

Helen McDonald, Assistant Deputy Minister, Spectrum, Information Technologies and Telecommunications;

Louis LePage, Manager, Industry Framework, Industry Framework Policy;

Shari Scott, Manager, Policy and Communications, Broadband Canada.

Mr. Lord made a statement and, together with Mr. Patrick, answered questions.

At 9:34 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:36 a.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. McDonald made a statement and, together with Mr. LePage and Ms. Scott, answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
