The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Commerce and the Economy met this day at 4:15 p.m., in room W110, 1 Wellington St., the chair, the Honourable Pamela Wallin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Gignac, Loffreda, Martin, Massicotte, Ringuette, Varone, Wallin and Yussuff (8).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Dalphond (1).

Participating in the meeting: Brett Howard and Adriane Yong, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 10, 2024, the committee continued its examination on Canada’s monetary policy framework.

WITNESSES:

Statistics Canada:

Jennifer Withington, Assistant Chief Statistician, Economic Statistics;

Matthew MacDonald, Director, Consumer Prices Division;

Brenda Bugge, Director, National Economic Accounts Division;

Matthew Hoffarth, Assistant Director, National Economic Accounts Division.

As an individual:

Jacqueline Best, Full Professor, School of Political Studies, University of Ottawa.

Jacqueline Best made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:05 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:08 p.m., the committee resumed.

Jennifer Withington made a statement and, together with Brenda Bugge, Matthew Hoffarth and Matthew MacDonald, answered questions.

At 5:56 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
